Tableau I
Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian (1872 – 1944), was a Dutch painter and theoretician who is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. He is known for being one of the pioneers of 20th-century abstract art, as he changed his artistic direction from figurative painting to an increasingly abstract style, until he reached a point where his artistic vocabulary was reduced to simple geometric elements.

Tableau I - Piet Mondrian created "Tableau I" in 1921, two years after moving from his native Netherlands to Paris. In moving to Paris Mondrian entered a brand new phase of creativity and artistic freedom, his works becoming gradually more abstract, moving away from the traditional naturalistic approach he was taught at home. Tableau I is one of Mondrian's first pieces to so prominently display his newfound style, and as a result it is a piece of great importance.
