The Boat Builders
Winlsow Homer

Winslow Homer was born on February 24, 1836 in Boston, Massachusetts. Homer was an American painter whose works, particularly those on marine subjects, are among the most powerful and expressive of late 19th-century American art. His mastery of sketching and watercolour lends to his oil paintings the invigorating spontaneity of direct observation from nature.

The Boat Builders was created with oil on panel in 1873. This scene pairs Homer’s love of outdoor subjects with his favorite theme of boys at play. The overlapping toy boat and sailing ship connects the real world with the boys’ imagination. Homer was the era’s premier interpreter of the American way of life.
